People, Planet, Profit: Sustainability for today's ethical professional

This session is the second of two webinars by Dr Joseph Lambert on the topics of ethics and sustainability for translators.

Using John Elkington's famous triple bottom line model as a basis, this session explores the key range of sustainability challenges facing translators today through the lenses of people, profit, and planet. This entails covering everything from the ecological impact of our work and our place in society, to considering our own wellbeing and working conditions, as well as examining the role that ongoing technological developments play in all of these conversations.

The aim of the session is not only to alert attendees to the range of sustainability challenges emerging in the contemporary industry context, but also to equip them with practical tools to take positive steps in their ethical practice. For instance, it will offer actionable advice on self-care, share concrete figures on the environmental impact of technological tools in translation, allowing them to spread awareness of the potential impacts of automated workflows (which are often underreported and/or unknown to clients), and present survey and focus group data (gathered by the presenter) to illustrate the sense of solidarity that exists in relation to financial sustainability in particular.

The challenges covered are contextualised using a range of engaging case studies, and the session will conclude with an open discussion of several thought-provoking scenarios, allowing participants to reflect on the principles covered, as well as their own internalised moral codes.

Participants will come away with a deeper understanding of the range of potential sustainability questions that arise in our work as translators and the ability to reflect on these challenges in an informed, nuanced manner.

Who is this course for?

This course will be of use to translators at any stage of their careers. The overarching nature of the content covered means that these questions are of relevance to everyone.

Learning objectives:

Participants will come away with a deeper understanding of the range of potential sustainability questions that arise in our work as translators, the ability to reflect on these challenges in an informed, nuanced manner, and practical means of engaging with these challenges in a meaningful way. 

Dr Joseph Lambert is a passionate Translation Studies academic and a freelance translator working from French and Italian into English. 

Joseph specialises in sports translation, having worked in the industry for a number of years during his studies, but in recent years has focused more on his academic career.

Since completing a PhD in 2018, Joseph has worked as a lecturer in Translation Studies in universities across the UK. He currently teaches on the undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Translation Studies at Cardiff University, running both practical and theoretical sessions on everything from Trados to translation ethics.

As well as having significant teaching experience, Joseph is also an active researcher and has written articles, book chapters, and a textbook on various facets of translation. While his primary research interest is translation ethics, he has also written extensively on the translation profession, including works tackling rates of pay, working conditions, and sustainability.
